Forced by tuberculosis to quit railroad work in 1924, twenty-seven- year-old Jimmie Rodgers drifted aimlessly for three years before he was discovered by talent scout Ralph Peer of the Victor Talking Machine Company. LEFT: Rodgers' 1927 recording of "'T' For Texas" (Blue Yodel) sold half a million copies and opened the door for commercial Country music. Billed as "The Singing Brakeman," Rodgers became Country music's first superstar with his "blue yodels." CENTER: At his $50,000 dream home, "Blue Yodeler's Paradise," Rodgers, far left, and wife Carrie, far right, and daughter Anita relax with manager Peer and Mrs Peer. RIGHT: Rodgers combined the music of America's south, north, east and west to create the wellspring from which County music in America flows.

Over a remarkably short career of 6 years from 1927 until his untimely death at 1933 from TB Jimmie Rodgers recorded 110 songs and sold over 10 million records.
|
Travelling across America as an itinerant railroad worker he assimilated many music influences Appalachian ballads, Blues, black Spirituals, white Pop, and even the unlikely sounds of Swiss yodels and Hawaiian guitars to lay the foundation of commercial Country music in America.
During his lifetime he was affectionately known as both "The Singing Brakeman" and "America's Blue Yodeler."
In retrospect, and in more profound terms, Jimmie Rodgers is recognized simply as "The Father of Country Music," and was so honored as the first inductee into The Country Music Hall of Fame when it was established in Nashville in 1961.
In 1986 he was among the first group of musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
