Range/Bettmann/UPI 6 appearances January 28, 1956 February 4, 1956 February 11, 1956 February 18, 1956 March 17, 1956 March 24, 1956 Prior to January 28, 1956, Elvis was a regional phenomenon in the mid south. His 6 appearances on the Dorsey Brothers' Stage Show made Elvis a household word as middle America looked on in amusement. Nobody suspected they were watching the birth of Rock & Roll.	Range/Bettmann/UPI 2 appearances April 3, 1956 June 5, 1956 During his tours of the mid south Elvis learned that if he wiggled his hips, girls would scream and run off to buy his records. He tried his bump and grind on The Milton Berle Show and outraged middle America. One critic described Elvis as "unspeakably untalented and vulgar." Kids loved him, though. Elvis personified the rebellious spirit of a new generation. Recommended: Shock, Rattle & Roll: Elvis Photographed During The Milton Berle Show	Range/Bettmann/UPI 1 appearance July 1, 1956 Steve Allen, no big fan of Rock& Roll, decided to have Elvis on his show after seeing the ratings Berle got with Elvis. America was definitely curious, and Allen had a new variety show trying to compete with Ed Sullivan. Aware of the controversy caused on the Berle show, Allen introduced "the new Elvis Presley" now wearing a tuxedo. Despite the fancy duds, Allen's show was demeaning to both Elvis and Country music.	3 appearances September 9, 1956 October 28, 1956 January 6, 1957 Ed Sullivan swore Elvis Presley would never appear on his show. That is, until viewers turned away from Sullivan's top-rated show to watch Presley on Allen's show. Sullivan relented, but by now Elvis' contortions had earned him the reputation "Elvis the Pelvis." To prevent further moral outrage, Elvis was televised from the waist up. Notwithstanding, or perhaps because of, Elvis' performances on Sullivan were very popular. Sullivan went out of his way to say that Elvis was "a real decent, fine boy," an endorsement that helped pave the way for Elvis' acceptance by middle America and the music establishment.
